The former Pneumatic Equipment rental location, a small industrial property in Kalihi Kai, had historic reports of waste oil dumping. Previous investigations were inconclusive. The Hawai’i Department of Health Underground Storage Tank Section requested a complete investigation and hazard evaluation to determine whether the site needed active cleanup. We conducted a soil and groundwater investigation and risk assessment that met the state’s requirements. Soil contamination is many feet underground beneath a concrete cover. Groundwater contamination is minimal. The site is close to closure with just a commonsense notice of safeguards to be put in place in the event of future development.
